1979-03 | A KNHK | NAS Patuxent River, HH-46A station SAR bird I was assigned from Mar79-Jul81 “ In late October of 1980, 152540 was on a routine training hop over the Chesapeake Bay south of the air station, with the internal tank install, full bag of fuel. The #2 engine failed (accessory tower shaft sheared) during a practice Doppler hover at 50’. the aircraft settled into the water and was water taxied to shore 2 miles away. The HAC was able to “jump” the now saturated aircraft’s nose while up onto the beach. The crew chief tied the aircraft off to a tree with the rescue hoist. No injuries. NAS crews worked to strip and then lift the stricken bird back to the air station under an H47 from a near by Army post. The aircraft was returned to airworthy condition in less than 45 days and was flown to NARF Cherry point for rework.
