I was HSL-37 Det.7 pilot attached to USS Davidson HSL-37 “ I was a helicopter pilot US Navy attached to HSL-37 Det 7 attached to USS Davidson. It was approximately 9:45 pm relatively clear night with seas appx. 2-3' and replenishment had already began. I was on deck of the Davidson and observed the crash. The H-46 was making an approach to the Wichita when it was noticed that it's front gear would not lower. I believe it was going to get refueled to finish the replenishment of Davidson. The H-46 was waved off and the Wichita went to get mattresses so H-46 could lower nose on mattresses without damaging the A/C. A/C was on final approach to the deck of Wichita when it flew into the water. A/C crashed within 100 yds of where I was standing on the deck of USS Davidson ”
I was the crew chief HC-11 Det 5. We had 3 missions that day. A flip of a coin, I took the first 2 hops, and the other crew chief Robert Malvicia, took the night hop.. Some 30 years later, still remember like it was yesterday..rest in peace boys. HC-11
1980-08-04 | I was aboard the USS Constellation (CV-64) and getting out of the Navy on 04aug80. Flew onto the Wichita via H-46 early that day for later transfer to Diego Garcia. Pretty sure I flew in on the same helicopter that went down as the other H-46 was down for maintenance. Participated in the search and rescue efforts and remembered one survivor that had been in water close to 24 hours |
