1979-05-30 | C PASI | 30 asg CGAS Sitka, Alaska, I flew on this aircraft during a Northern Fish Patrol from CGAS Sitka to Yakutat, Alaska and return Coast Guard Air Station Sitka
1981 | D KSAN | Coast Guard Air Station San Diego “ I flew on this Helo many times during my tour in SD from 81-85. There was a lottery to see who got to fly on a "movie flight", I didn't get selected, but I knew all the guys on this flight. The guys came back after a long day and said it was horrible, they basically flew in circles all day for the take after take. If you notice, the take in the movie is at dusk, one of the last takes used in the move. Also interesting to note is the CG DID NOT HAVE Rescue Swimmers at the time, only the Navy had them. The USCG decided to implement them AFTER TOP GUN. My buddy was the ASM (Aviation Survival Man) on this flight. He also said it was horrible, take after take swimming over to Tom Cruise. Tom puked his guts out because he was bobbing around in the water for hours. The ASM also complained that they didn't use his voice in the movie. The line "sir you gotta let him go" was dubbed LOL! They developed the "RESUE SWIMMER" program after the movie (see The Guardian Movie loosely based on the crash of the 1471 in AK with Kevin Costner). I use Top Gun as the reference to tell people what I did in the Coast Guard. Greatest duty ever on HH3F's in San Diego! - ”
