The magnificent Royal Naval College building itself (designed by Sir Aston Webb) was opened in 1905, named after HMS Britannia which had been moored in the River Dart since Sep 1863, below the site.
From 1962, the site was served by Norton Heliport to the south west of the town, until its closure to make way for a leisure centre.
The College site, which has 3 landing areas of varying surfaces, remains open for infrequent military visitors and the site has narrowly survived the swingeing Strategic Defence and Security Review (aka Camerons Folly) of Oct 2010.
