Construction began at this forest site in 1953. It opened as RAF Laarbruch with ICAO code EDUL, receiving 69 Squadrons Canberras in Nov 1954. It was predominantly a strike/reconnaisance base until Dec 1992, when 18 Squadron arrived with its Chinook and Puma helicopters, when RAF Gütersloh closed. 18 Squadron left for the UK in Jun 1996 and the RAF base closed on 30 Nov 1999. The land was sold and redeveloped as a commercial base, Niederrhein which opened in May 2003 with ICAO code EDLV and IATA code NLN.

Nr 18 Squadron was posted to RAF Odiham (UK) with the Puma HC1 and the Chinook HC2 on 1 August 1997. (not June 1996) 15 Feb 1997: A Puma HC1 helicopter - XW225 - of No 18 Squadron with three crew and 5 passengers crashed near the village Urspring (Schongau - Bavaria). Due to heavy snow fall and the use of night vision goggles the crew lost all visual references. The pilot Flt Lt Christopher Herd (32) was killed when the trees into which his aircraft crashed, fell onto the cockpit. 2 crew and 5 passengers survived the crash. see www.laarbruch-museum.de
