Originally a base for airships as RNAS Luce Bay from 1914, it re-opened as RAF West Freugh in 1937 and continued as such until 1956, when it became RAE West Freugh and was taken over by the Royal Aircraft Establishment. With the reorganisation of UK Defence research, QinetiQ took over in 2001 and it became MoD West Freugh, with range facilities conducting weapons test and evaluation and a number of other defence related activities.
