The airfield has historically been the home of the Bristol Aeroplane Company, Rolls Royce and more recently Airbus Industries. BAE Systems, the airfield owner closed the site in Dec 2012, in preparation for industrial and housing re-development and a planned aviation museum to include the Concorde airframe stored on site.
The Helicopter operations for Air Ambulance and Police continued until late 2018, when they both moved to a new site at Almondsbury a few miles to the north, much closer to major motorway intersections.
