The Royal Flying Corps used the base until the Royal Air Force was formed on 1 Apr 1918. It remained an RAF base throughout WWII and around 1950 it was handed over to the US Air Force as a strategic bomber base. The 20th Tactical Fighter Wing began its move to Upper Heyford in Dec 1969 and in Sep 1970, the first F-111E had arrived to replace its F-100D Super Sabres. By 1993, the USAF had departed as part of the peace dividend from the fall of the Berlin Wall, apparently ending the Cold War.
Since then the base has been used from time to time as a movie set, with parts of Octopussy, Wonder Woman and World War Z all being shot here.
