Bolling Field opened in 1918, just north of the present site. It was moved south from its original location in 1932, after heavy rainfall flooded the area a few years earlier.
Fixed-wing aircraft operations ceased in 1962 due to congested airspace around Washington National Airport (KDCA) on the opposite shore of the Potomac River. In 2010 it was merged with the Naval Support Facility Anacostia (NDV) to form Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling.
Although USAF 1001st Helicopter Sq departed to Andrews AFB in early Sep1968, a helipad has been present since at least 1985 and was still there in 2021.
