Built in 1943 with a tarmac runway and small apron, a terminal building was added and opened in 1945. Work has continued and a major phase concluded in 1990. Further improvements are underway after privatisation in Apr 2004. The airport also housed the British Army 25 Flight on the north side until September 2011, when it returned to the UK.
