Dedicated in Feb 2005 and officially opened on 11 Jul 2005, John A Osborne Airport was rebuilt to replace the W H Bramble Airport in the east of the island, which was destroyed by a massive eruption of Soufriere Hills volcano on 25 June 1997.
This eruption also buried the town of Plymouth, the island capital, under 1.5m of hot ash and led to its final abandonment.
