RNAS Twatt was opened April 1941 and runways were completed by Jul that year. In 1942 the base was commissioned as HMS Tern. 771 NAS brought its R-4 Hoverfly complement here in 1945 to explore potential uses of the helicopter in RN service, departing in Jul 1945.
The base closed in 1949 and the site was released in Jan 1957. After decades of decay, some spectacular preservation work on the buildings in the SW corner of the site, has been carried out by local groups.
