History of this Base/Heliport:

  • Construction began at this forest site in 1953. It opened as RAF Laarbruch with ICAO code EDUL, receiving 69 Squadron's Canberras in Nov 1954. It was predominantly a strike/reconnaisance base until Dec 1992, when 18 Squadron arrived with its Chinook and Puma helicopters, when RAF Gütersloh closed. 18 Squadron left for the UK in Jun 1996 and the RAF base closed in Nov 1999. The land was sold and redeveloped as a commercial base, Niederrhein which opened in May 2003 with ICAO code EDLV and IATA code NLN.
