History of this Base/Heliport:

  • Built in the New Territories. The RAF restored and maintained the base at RAF Sek Kong after WWII. Facilities were improved and runways were re-furbished. In 1978, the RAF Wessex HC.2 arrived on the base and regular rotary wing operations began. There was an influx of refugees from Vietnam in the mid-1980s and the Hong Kong government established a camp on the base, closing it to fixed-wing aircraft until 1992, when the camp was cleared. The Wessex moved to Kai Tak (VHKT) and RAF Sek Kong was formally closed in Nov 1996. The Chinese People's Liberation Army flew its helicopters in during Jul 1997.
