History of this Base/Heliport:

  • The airport was originally built by the Portuguese. After the recovery of the area by India in Operation Vijay (Dec 1961), the base at Dabolim, on the Vasco da Gama peninsula to the south of Goa was taken over as a Naval Base. It was named INS Hansa on 2 Sep 1964. It has become the headquarters of Indian Naval Aviation and is the home of Flag Officer Naval Aviation (FONA).
