History of this Base/Heliport:

  • RAF Butterworth had only opened in Oct 1941 and was still working up before it came under Japanese attack in Dec 1941. It re-opened in Jan 1946 and civil flights began in early 1947. It supported RAF operations during the Malayan emergency in the early 1950s. By 1 Jul 1958 had been transferred to the RAAF, following its deployment to the area in 1955. It hosted RAF units during the Indonesian confrontation of the 1960s and the RAAF during its Vietnamese operations. Butterworth is now a key RMAF Base.
