History of this Base/Heliport: Help Us

  • Available as a grass strip from 1939 for RAF bombers and officially opened in 1940. It closed again for further work to make its runways concrete. It reopened in mid 1942 and in Jan 1943 became an RCAF base until handed back to the RAF in Sep 1945 as part of Transport Command. It was used by Coastal Command from 1952 and then by Training Command. In 1972, the whole base was transferred to the Army and the main buildings are still known as Alanbrooke Barracks. The airfield part of base has been home to various AAC units but is now back with the RAF as a satellite station of nearby RAF Linton-on-Ouse.
