History of this Base/Heliport: Help Us

  • Opened Oct 1940 as an RAF Coastal Command station and played a key role in WWII anti-submarine operations. It became home to a fast jet training until the mid 1970s. Extensive work was carried out in the late 1970s to transform the base for fast jet weapons training, which arrived in Jun 1980 and stayed until 1994. Although the base is now a Royal Marine barracks, given its location on the north Devon coast, it is still the long time home to a Search and Rescue unit and a gliding unit.
