RAF Thorney Island was opened as part of the pre-WWII expansion programme, in 1938. It was used throughout the war and afterwards transferred to Coastal Command and then Transport Command. 46 Squadron flew its Andover C.1s from here until its de-commissioning in 1975. The runways remain, although after a short period with the Royal Navy and then as a refugee camp for Vietnamese boat people in the early 1980s, they are in poor condition. The Army took over around 1985 and it is now known as Baker Barracks. |
