Sikorsky modified a S-62A (c/n 62-008) to accept the larger four blade S-58 rotor and other S-58 components in order to satisfy a requirement of the Indian Air Force for a high altitude SAR helicopter of greater performance than the three bladed S-62A. Only one was built (N977) and sent to India for testing where it eventually crashed. The Indians found the Mil-4 able to fulfill the requirement.
