Canada ordered 41 Sikorsky CHSS-2 ASW helicopters for the Royal Canadian Navy in 1960. The first few were built by Sikorsky in CT with the remainder being assembled at United Aircraft of Canada (a subsidiary of Sikorskys parent company, United Technology) in Montreal. Upon unification in 1968, the helicopters were redesignated CH-124 Sea King.

Crashed on take-off from HMCS Iroquois (DDH-280), back onto the flight deck during an emergency recovery, after a single engine failure, on 27 Feb 2003. Rolled onto its starboard side, spilling its fuel tanks, plus 2200 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition. Ship was 100km south east of Halifax NS, en route to the Arabian Sea for Operation Apollo. She returned to Halifax where the airframe was recovered by crane.
