U Miami to have a AS350B3e as research platform
Airbus Helicopters, February 25, 2014 - Anaheim, California – The University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (RSMAS) has purchased an Airbus Helicopters, Inc. AS350B3e to serve as a flying scientific laboratory.

Ordered in December 2013 and scheduled for delivery this summer, the AS350B3e will be primarily used as a research platform and will be equipped with state-of-the-art technology. The University’s first helicopter, it was purchased using gifts from private foundations and an anonymous donor.

University officials selected the AS350B3e because of its high-altitude capabilities, overall performance, and spacious cabin design. The cabin can easily support the mounting of scientific instruments and computers on racks.

“No other aircraft offers the flexibility of a helicopter, in terms of payload, maneuverability and safety,” said Dr. Roni Avissar, Dean of the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science. “The ability for slow flight and low altitude offers an ideal opportunity for critical environmental data collection near the interface between the Earth’s surface and the atmosphere. This one-of-a-kind Helicopter Observation Platform (HOP) will support the research missions of University of Miami scientists and a host of other research institutions around the world by improving our understanding of the Earth’s environment.”

The HOP will allow scientists to obtain vital information on environmental processes and mechanisms that affect climate and impact human health. It also will be utilized for aerial photography of natural disasters, such as hurricanes, and transportation of scientists and their equipment to remote areas difficult or impossible to access from the ground.

“We are proud that the University of Miami chose the Airbus Helicopters Inc. AS350B3e to assist in their research efforts,” said Treg Manning, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Airbus Helicopters Inc. “The AS350B3e is the best performing single-engine turbine helicopter on the market. Its versatility and performance capabilities will make it the ideal platform for this type of research.”

The AS350B3e is the latest version of the AStar family, one of the most popular, high-tech helicopter platforms in the U.S. The AStar AS350B3e is known for its performance, reliability and multi-mission flexibility, bringing next-generation performance to the AStar family.
