EC145 EMS delivered to Boston MedFlight

EC145 EMS delivered to Boston MedFlight
Eurocopter, August 14, 2013 - Grand Prairie, Texas – Boston MedFlight has taken delivery of a new Eurocopter EC145 helicopter that will be used to provide life-saving emergency airborne medical transport service for a consortium of leading Boston hospitals.

Boston MedFlight selected the EC145 in January as the most capable and cost efficient aircraft to replace their current fleet of BK117s. The new helicopter, complete with a customized emergency medical services interior installed by Metro Aviation, features the latest flight control, navigation and safety technology. The decision to purchase the EC145 was made by Boston MedFlight officials after a thorough evaluation of competitive aircraft as the initial step in a phased fleet upgrade program.

“This is one of the best emergency medical service aircraft out there,” said Charles Blathras, Chief Operations Manager and Critical Care Transport Specialist for Boston MedFlight. “We looked at every competing aircraft across the board. The reliability and dependability of the EC145 is huge for us.”

“American Eurocopter is proud and honored that Boston MedFlight selected the EC145 to continue their life-saving work and we’re happy to deliver this new helicopter to them ready to go to work flying missions for the people of Massachusetts,” said Treg Manning, Vice President of Sales for American Eurocopter.

The EC145 offers multimission capability in a medium-class, twin-engine helicopter. It has a strong sales record in the U.S. market among air medical service operators, winning competitions based on the aircraft’s speed, advanced glass cockpit, extra-large cabin and exceptional visibility. The high-set main and tail rotors of the EC145 enhance safety in ground operations, even during “hot” loading/unloading operations with the rotors turning.

“It will do 95 percent of what we need to do with a helicopter,” Blathras said, adding that the EC145s speed and range should enable Boston MedFlight to extend its operating range and provide greater service to the offshore island communities. Boston MedFlight operates from bases in Plymouth, Bedford and North Andover. Blathras said Boston MedFlight anticipates ordering a second EC145 in the near future.

Boston MedFlight began air medical transport via helicopters in 1985 using a BK117, a predecessor of the EC145 that is supported by American Eurocopter. Boston MedFlight now has three helicopters, operated by ERA Helicopters, and also flies one fixed-wing aircraft.
Boston MedFlight is a not-for-profit organization providing critical care transport service using state-of-the-art air and ground vehicles and equipment. It provides the highest level of care to more than 2,700 patients a year and has transported more than 52,000 critical patients since its founding in 1985.

Boston MedFlight is financially supported in part by a consortium of Boston hospitals including Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston Medical Center, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston Children’s Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital and Tufts Medical Center.
