  • Brazilian Air Force Will Have New Helicopter This Year

Forca Aerea Brasileira, April 16, 2015 - The capacity of the Brazilian Air Force (FAB) to comply with search and rescue missions will be further enhanced this year.

The first helicopter H-36 Caracal, in operational version, is ready and is one of the attractions of LAAD 2015, the Security adn Defense show held until tomorrow (17/04), in Rio de Janeiro (RJ).

The helicopter arrived flying to Riocentro and is part of the Brazilian company Helibras stand. According to the head of the engineering center, Walter Filho, is already underway in military certification, one of the steps required for delivery.

The FAB H-36 operational version will be the first helicopter in Latin America with probe to be refueled in the air. The capacity, which is available today in Brazil only for fighter aircraft, will allow extend the radius of action for missions such as rescue at sea.

The four H-36 in basic version, now in use by the Esquadrão Falcão (1º/8ºGAV), at Belém (PA) have autonomy of three hours and fifty minutes which is enough to fulfill a mission to about 250km away from the base, with forecast of 60 minutes to perform the search and another 15 minutes to the rescue. The new version can multiply these numbers. "There are no limits. In terms of system, there is no limitation," explains Walter Filho.

According to the FAB General Commander of Air Operations (COMGAR, Comandante-Geral de Operações Aéreas), Air Lieutenant General Gérson Nogueira Machado, you need to conduct training to get the full potential of the aircraft. "It's another generation of helicopters that fully modifies our doctrine and our chances", he said.

Assembled in Brazil by the Airbus Helicopters consortium and Helibras in Itajubá (MG), the operational H-36 are similar to those used by the armed forces of France in special missions and combat search and rescue (CSAR). The helicopters will rely on sensors, such as the Radar Warning Receiver (RWR) and Missile Approach Warning System (MAWS), able to detect the presence of radar and enemy missiles. "These systems, however, are more modern in the Brazilian version", says the head of the engineering center of Helibras.

The helicopter received brazilian integrated systems such as electronic countermeasures and encrypted communication. Infrared camera and laser detector for tracking targets, and a video and voice recording equipment, are also part of their systems. The H-36 allows operation with night vision goggles (NVG) and has enhanced armour, dual winch hook for external load and the possibility of install two 7.62mm machine guns.

Regarding their interior space, is superior from models such as the H-60 Black Hawk and UH-1H. Can take up to eleven litters plus four health professionals. In their standard role can carry up to thirty-one soldiers on board.

The acquisition project of these aircraft for the FAB is part of a package of 50 helicopters ordered for the three armed forces. They are 16 for the Navy, 16 for the Army, 16 for the Air Force and the last two for use for the President. To date, fifteen helicopters have already been delivered. It is expected that, in addition to the FAB operational aircraft this year also two of the basic version will be delivered to the Navy.

190,000 hours of flight

Helibras held on Wednesday (15/04), at LAAD, a symbolic ceremony for 16 aircraft delivered for the Armed Forces (intended for the Navy). The Brazilian Air Force was also honored by 190,000 hours of flight time in Helibras models H-50 helicopters Squirrel, H-34 Super Puma, VH-34 Super Puma and H-36 Caracal.
