CBP, August 31, 2017 - HOUSTON, TX – On Tuesday evening, Air and Marine Operations (AMO) UH-1N aircrews transported critical supplies from the temporary Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) headquarters at Randolph Air Force Base, in San Antonio, to a FEMA relief center on the west side of Houston.
FEMA relief centers are running out of supplies, such as Meals Ready-to-Eat and potable water, with no ground transportation available for restocking.
Two AMO aircrews arrived at the temporary FEMA headquarters yesterday to load over 6,000 pounds of meals and water onto the aircraft, for transport to a relief center on the west side of Houston that had depleted their reserves.
AMO aircrews continue to evacuate residents stranded by flood waters and inclement weather. Currently, AMO has multiple fixed- and rotor-wing aircraft, including UH-60 Black Hawks, UH-1Ns, and AS350 A-Star helicopters; Super King Air 350ER Multi-Role Enforcement Aircraft; and P-3 Orions to aid with search and rescue, transport, communications relay, and air traffic coordination. In addition to the vital blood platelet transport, AMO aircrews have transported life-sustaining supplies to FEMA relief centers and rescued 443 residents from flooded areas.
“It is total devastation,” said Air Interdiction Agent Derek Richardson. “We are moving quickly from one rescue situation to another. Many people are still stranded in flooded areas with little to no supplies. We are doing what we can to get those affected the vital resources they need, and remove them from life-threatening situations.”
AMO’s advanced capabilities and skill sets in the air and maritime environments fall within our core competencies: interdiction, investigation, domain awareness, and contingency operations and national tasking missions. AMO performs a wide range of incident-based missions in response to state and federal emergencies, such as disaster relief, continuity of operations, humanitarian operations, search and rescue, tactical team insertions and logistics, and National Special Security Events.
