The helicopters arrived disassembled, transported by a C-17 of the U.S. Air Force. These aircraft were acquired from Sikorsky in a batch of six helicopters with the agreement concluded in May 2008 with the U.S. Government. They will replace the SH-3A/B "Seaking" which provided good services for over 40 years.

The new MH-16 aircraft belong to the First Squadron Helicopter Anti-Submarine (HS-1) and will be used for the benefit of the Naval Forces, the Amazônia Azul (Blue Amazon) with the ability to perform tasks of detection, localization, tracking, identification and attack of surface and submarines targets as well as search and rescue actions.

The MH-16 has structural and design features that give it more strength, endurance and reliability, such as redundancy of systems, flight control and hydraulic systems, and ballistic tolerance of the main rotor blades to fire rounds up to 20 mm
