Previously known as Operation Active Endeavour, the decision to transform the mission was taken at NATOs Warsaw summit in Jul 2016. Operation Sea Guardian has three main objectives: maritime situational awareness, capacity building and counter-terrorism.
Initial participants included surface units from Bulgaria, Italy and Turkey supported by Maritime Patrol Aircraft from Greece, Italy, Portugal, Spain and Turkey.
