Following the Partition of Cyprus in summer 1974, tensions rose again after the failure of peace talks between the Greek and Turkish factions in Geneva. Britain sent warships off the Cyprus coast in support of the extended deployment of the UN Peace Keeping Force, (established under UN Security Council Resolution 186 (1964) and extended into 1975 by UN Security Council Resolution 364). On 13 Feb the Turkish community declared northern Cyprus to be an independent state and the next day, the operation concluded.
