Operation Belisi

Bougainville, Solomon Islands

dec-97 to apr-98

Operation History:

  • A simmering resentment escalated into a full blown dispute around 1995 with Papua New Guinea and the islanders of Bougainville in the Solomon Island group.  Following a truce, the Royal New Zealand Air Force sent a Helicopter Force Element (drawn from 3 Squadron), consisting of 3 UH-1 Iroquois to the island in Dec 1997, as part of an international Truce Monitoring Group. The Hueys were airlifted in by the C-130 Hercules of 40 Squadron RNZAF.
  • After a peace agreement was signed in Apr 1998, the bright orange, high visibility Hueys were withdrawn and arrived back in New Zealand in early May 1998.  The TMG was relieved by the Australian-led Peacekeeping Monitoring Group.
