First formed as trials Squadron (with A and B flights) in 1938. A Flight eventually reformed as 772 Squadron on 6 Sep 1974 at RNAS Portland, from 6 Wessex HAS.1 left behind by 771 Squadron, which had just moved to RNAS Culdrose.

The Wessex 1 was replaced by the Wessex 5 between Feb 1975 and Sep 1976 in the SAR role. Parenting the Fleet Tanker Wessex Flights became a 772 Squadron responsibility on 9 Sep 1976, with A Flt aboard RFA Resource, B Flt aboard RFA Olmeda and C Flt on RFA Regent. In Feb 1983, it gained the Wessex HAS.3 from 737 Squadron and the Lee-on-Solent SAR Flight was formed from C Flt of 772 Squadron.

The Wessex HU.5s were replaced by Sea King HC.4s (as the Commando is known in RN service) in Mar 1988. It disbanded on 30 Sep 1995, after serving 21 years at RNAS Portland.




The ORB for RAF North Coates states that on 26 sept 1940. One aircraft ( Fairey Swordfish and personnel of 772 Sqdn Fleet Air Arm arrived at this station to carry out none operational flyting in conjunction with the Royal Navy

I served with 772 squadron at Arbroath 1946 to 1948. We had 9 Mosquitoes
