united kingdom 228 squadron

Royal Air Force

1918 to 1964

Unit History:

Originally formed at Great Yarmouth from 324, 325 & 326 Flights on 20 Aug 1918. After wartime service as a flying boat unit and a short post-war period in Maritime Reconnaisance until 6 Mar 1959, it was reformed on 1 Sep 1959 at RAF Leconfield from 275 Squadron. A Sycamore Flight it had inherited was passed to 118 Squadron and all Sycamores had departed by Jun 1960. Its Whirlwind HAR.2s and HAR.4s were joined on re-formation by fixed wing Ansons for 6 months. In Dec 1962 the original Whirlwinds were replaced by the more capable Whirlwind HAR.10. On 1 Sep 1964, the unit was renumbered 202 Squadron.
