5/Jan/2000 22:10:35 - [ 207.225.144.197 ] from Steve Thul ( steveth@uswest.net )
I am a Vietnam Era Vet Disabled in the military at 60%.I also am an Airline Transport Pilot and have flown professionally. I have flown the Governor of MN, Rudy Purpich and many other government officials.Because of my disability, sitting, standing, pulling and pushing is very difficult at best.I have 1.3 acres of land with a workshop located in my back yard that I built to maintain and store a small 2-place helicopter. I use this helicopter for both personal and business travel to shorten the time it takes to get from point A to point B. Because of 1 person in the area complaining, the Ham Lake City Council is drafting a ordinance stopping me from using this mode of transportation. Please note that safety, noise and frequency of use is minimal. Being disabled, I use this mode of transportation to minimize the travel time so I don't have to stop frequently because of the pain my sustained injuries create. The Ham Lake City council is making this ordinance with little or no knowledge of both aviation and people with disabilities. I am under the impression that state and local governments are supposed to help not hinder access to the public areas. Includes is an article written in our local newspaper, please read further....There is a battle going on here in Ham Lake Minnesota between the City of Ham Lake and Steve Thul on whether he can land his Helicopter at his home which is on an acre of land. There was only one neighbor that was complaining about him landing at his home, but all of the other 20+ neighbors see no problem with it. Well the City of Ham Lake put a ban on him from landing or taking off from his home. Here is a copy of a NEWS article from KMSP.com so that you may get a better understanding of the situation. Helicopter Battle A disabled Army veteran is battling city officials for the right to continue using his large residential back yard as a landing pad or his small helicopter. Steve Thul, 44, is a computer software engineer who flies to visit Clients across Minnesota and Wisconsin. Because of a 1977 Army injury, Thul says it is painful to sit for the long periods of time it would take to visit clients by car. But Ham Lake officials are threatening to prosecute Thul if heDoesn't find another landing pad, saying they're afraid the flights Endanger people who live in about 20 surrounding homes. City officials have suggested that Thul could store the chopper at an airport or nearby field. "We don't think it's safe," said Wilburn Dorn, Ham Lake City attorney. "There's just no way that a helicopter making landings on a 1-acre lot is a compatible use in a single-family, residential subdivision." "They're denying me my right to transportation," said Thul, a licensed airline transport pilot. "It's a lot easier to fly from Point A to Point B than to sit in my vehicle for twice as long." Thul said his Rotorway Exec 90, a two-seat, 162-horsepower helicopter, cuts his travel time in half. He said the 28-foot-long Copter is maneuverable enough to refuel at gas stations, land safely in his yard and wheel into the shed behind his house. In November, the city attorney concluded that the helicopter violated zoning ordinances for a residential neighborhood because Thul used it for business travel. City officials also voiced concerns about the lack of landing lights, safety fencing and possibility that children might wander into the flight area. Thul promised not to fly over homes during takeoffs and landings, said he would build a fence and even volunteered to fly search-and-rescue and fire-watch missions for the city. But so far, the city has been firm. "People, when they buy a home in a residential neighborhood, don't expect that kind of activity," said Mayor Gary Kirkeide. "They expect a little peace and quiet, certainly not somebody coming out of the sky with blades whirring." Not all neighbors agree with the city."I can guarantee you my lawn tractor is louder than that," said Eric Levander, who lives across the street. "So is my snowmobile." Some neighbors have invited Thul to land in their yards. Thul has hired a lawyer to help him fight for access to his airspace. "I will take it all the way," Thul said. "I'm not a quitter. It's no longer an issue of a helicopter. It's an issue of rights being broken." 6/Jan/2000 17:52:38 - from jorge 14/Jan/2000 22:28:59 - [ 205.188.193.177 ] from Linda Lee ( lindakls@aol.com )

I am a writer in New Jersey. I'm writing a fiction piece and have only a limited understanding of how to fly a helicopter. I'm wondering if it is possible, for purposes of my plot, for a helicopter to fly or hover on its own if the pilot were no longer conscious. If so, how could this possibly happen. Your help is greatly appreciated. Please e-mail to froonj@ix.netcom.com. Thanks. John Froonjian 19/Jan/2000 19:25:7 - [ 216.165.154.74 ] from mike ( trimmer@midplains.net )

It is a shame that you have overlooked the MH-53J Pave Low III E , and it's vital contributions to the employment of the helicopter in modern airborne special operations . It's ability to terrain-follow/terrain-avoid and navigate in zero-zero conditions is unique(although the Army would like you to think differently), and has allowed it to participate in every major military operation since the early 1980's . This is a truly remarkable machine , with equally remarkable crews , and is well worth mention in any media dealing with helo history . 26/Jan/2000 18:54:37 - [ 206.107.27.202 ] from Craig ( juanita@ala.net )
I am a Army Aviator. Today during table talk with my IP (I'm in transition to the OH-58D.)we were trying to figure out what causes the left roll during retreating blade stall. We know why it shudders, and why it pithes nose up. I can't remember for the life of me "WHY THE LEFT ROLL". A question was submitted in this forum concerning the Brantly helicopter blade and rotor design. Just recently, an engineering page was added to the Brantly website (www.brantly.com). In it, one can find some information directly related to the Brantly doubly articulated blade concept. Also, the picture galleries on this same website offer a good look at the helicopter and more specifically the rotor. You can find this page from the "engineering" link in the "What's new" section on the home page. I will be working to add even more info such as design data. When it is posted to the website, an announcement will be made on this website. Further questions are welcome. 20/Feb/2000 9:30:16 - [ 63.28.152.78 ] from Ed Strazzini ( estraz@juno.com )
To Mike who had the question about Cobra weapons systems and the one round in every square inch of a football field at 120 mph. You should realize that this is a brash claim intended to impress people with the weapons system on these helicopters. I serious doubt if anyone went out the evaluate each of the thousands of square inches of a football sized field for slugs. More realistically with the high rate of fire miniguns (7.62) on the early Cobras which had one minigun in the turret (TAT) and the cabability of up to two more miniguns mounted under each wing, there could be a hell of a lot of lead going down range if all were fire a once. If you were standing on that football field or if the field were packed with volunteers, I suspect there would be few left standing after a firing pass by a Cobra configured as I described. More realistically those early Cobras (AH-1Gs) were usually configured with one minigun and one 40mm grenade launcher in the TAT and 2.75" rocket pods under the wings. In this configuration that crowded football field could be attacked with a nice variety of weapons. For such a target the flashette rocket (nails) does a fine job too. 21/Feb/2000 16:34:26 - [ 209.155.77.129 ] from jim ( goldeq@c-zone.net )

As an answer to Owen : tiopas@iinet.net.au Generally, technical reasons make the pilot seat wether in right or left side. Have a look at the R22 of ROBINSON. Due to the rotation of the blades, R22 would fly inclined on the left (the 'right' blade is the fastest one when flying - it speed is the rotation speed plus the translation speed while the 'left' balse have it speed equal to rotation speed minus of translation speed); Also th tank is on the left side. So, the pilot has to be on the right side to equilibrate the system. On big machine, this effeect is minored, but on a light one as a R22, it "'s so important that the machine is prtically 'non pilotable' if solo is done. 'solo from right seat is forbidden' I hope this helps and sorry for my poor English Jacky LEBON 3rd in 'freestyle' World Helicopter Champion Ship in 1994 at Tuschino Moscow Russia. 5/Mar/2000 15:46:10 - [ 62.20.200.220 ] from Andreas Nilsson ( andi@linux.nu )

My company has developed a new method of torque sensing that is relatively low cost, very reliable and accurate, and has already been used with success on Formula 1 race car driveshafts. We would like to explore use of the technology in helos. I have been told that the torque reading is one of the most important pieces of information used by the pilot. Why is this so? What sort of issues are there with present methods of torque sensing? Who are the companies with whom we should be talking? Answer to lrupert@methode-aecd.com question's.Torque is a paramount parameter on twin engine helicopter as a Main Gear Box limitation. On most modern twin engine helicopters, engines are far more powerful than the Main Gear Box may sustain. Thus, measure of the output torque from the engine toward the MGB is very important and need to be accurate otherwise, the MGB may be damaged by overpower from the engines. 3/May/2000 7:1:52 - [ 195.112.46.60 ] from David ( mik@aircargolive.com )

Jacky, I belive is wrong. The reaon that the pilot position is on the right is because the pilot needs his right hand to fly the A/C. Since the collective dosent need the attention that the cyclic needs its only natural to put the pilot on the right hand side. thus leaving the left hand to tune radios and preform other tasks. 13/Jun/2000 6:11:10 - [ 207.250.251.5 ] from Jerry ( fleastang@aol.com )

On my model helicopter cyclic pitch change leads the direction change by 90 degrees. For example, with aft cyclic the blades fore and aft are at neutral pitch, the advancing blade has increased pitch and the retreating blade has decreased pitch.I can't imagine the physics of the large machines ignore gyroscopic precession, so they must work the same way. Yet there are many references, including some in "How Flies?", that suggest for example that increased lift in the advancing blade causes a roll. On my heli, increased lift on the advancing blade causes the nose to rise. What's the real story? 12/Jul/2000 15:48:54 - [ 193.113.185.166 ] from mark forrest ( mrwheels37@hotmail.com )

An additional explanation for Owen : tiopas@iinet.net.au The fact is that in the early days of rotorcraft development the machines that flew then did indeed have a distinct difference in altitude between the left and right sides. The left side of the aircraft, at a hover, was considerably lower thatn the right side therefore it was determined that the right side should be the Pilot's seat. If the rotor system turned in the oposite direction the effect would be reversed. 27/Jul/2000 19:39:38 - [ 149.99.155.153 ] from Lu Zuckerman ( rmspdq@sprint.ca )

In your photo gallery you have a fuzzy picture of an Agusta A 101 G. In the text comment, you allude to the fact that Agusta only produced 3 copies due to encountering design related problems that plagued large helicopters at that time. WRONG! The A 101 G was constructed as a bargaining chip to force Vertol to give Agusta a license to build the CH-47. They told Vertol that if the license was not granted, they would put the A 101 G into production and sell it to military organizations in Europe that would otherwise buy CH-47's. Their plan worked and they never put the A 101 G into production. Later when Agusta joined with Westland to build the Merlin, Agusta won a P.....g contest with Westland to designate the Merlin as the EH 101.I worked at Agusta as an Engineering Consultant for almost three years. One day while walking around the facility I came across an old hulk thinking that it was of French origin. I thought this because the rotor head was of French design. I aked the Engineering manager about the hulk and he told me the story. 28/Jul/2000 20:1:50 - [ 149.99.165.116 ] from Lu Zuckerman ( rmspdq@sprint.ca )
A news article, on this website, addressing the V-22 crash it was comcluded that the pilot was decending too fast,(1000 Feet per minute) during the last 300 feet of his decent and could not slow the aircraft down. If this is the case, what happens during an autorotation decent which is well in excess of 1000 feet per minute. Most helicopters are rigged so that the helicopter decends at about 1400 feet per minute with a forward airspeed of 70 miles per hour. By the use of a cyclic flare the pilot can control his rate of decent while at the same time inputting stored energy into his spinning rotor system. This stored energy is used to slow the forward speed and arrest his rate of decent. The V-22 has this same capability but the rate of decent can be in excess of 4-6000 feet per minute. If the V-22 is ever certified, it will require an adjustment of the FAR's that address autorotation requirements. 5/Ago/2000 13:49:38 - [ 24.189.111.169 ] from Rob Van Tassel ( rolrhock@optonline.net )

I recently begun an interest in remote control helicoptors and ventured down to the hobby shop. I was amazed at the prices and started thinking about building my own. Unfortunately, I don't know as much about helicoptor designs and the physics behind it as I need to in order to build one yet. I am looking for any schematics an helicoptors that I can study from and any info on the physics behind them and the formulas to determine the ratio for the size, pitch, and revolutions of the tail rotor to the main rotor is greatly appreciated. I also need to determine how to figure out the balencing of the craft and how to determine the correct rpms for the size of the blades and the weight of what craft once fully assembled. 28/Jul/2000 20:1:50 - [ 149.99.165.116 ] from Lu Zuckerman ( rmspdq@sprint.ca )Regarding the V-22 Crash--- Lu, the crash was caused by a common condition called "seffling with power". During normal flight, the airflow moves downward through the rotor system; during an autorotation, the airflow moves upwards and maintains rotor RPM (like blowing on a child's pinwheel). When settling with power, the rotor system settles in it's own downwash. Checkout the aerodynamics section of this site: http://www.winternet.com/~taylor/apart.htm

HI everybody, I'm looking for a set of plans to the "Choppy", or called The "Flin' Triumph" and the "Hobbycopter". Thank you for your help....

The hobbycopter as you called it was actually the Hoppycopter and it was developed by Mr. Maurice L Ramme who was the president of Monte-Copter, Inc. Mr. Ramme sadly passed away several years ago while at the time trying to market an air jet powered helicopter. I believe that the company may have been shut down after Mr. Rammes death. His son Monte still lives in the Seattle area and at last contact was working for British Airways in SeaTac. You might try Seattle Information for Monte Rammes' phone number. Mr.Maurice Rammes' home phone number is or was (206) 932 7684. You might want to contact Mrs. Ramme or her daughter at that number. If perchance the company is still active, the phone number is or was (206) 938 3830.Good luck.

MAT: ASKING BY A SPECIAL TURBINE.
We are doing some previous research concerning the existence or not of a commercial (or military) turbo-engines capable of working as turbotrop (i.e.: main shaft of the turbo-engine ) and turbo-jet as well.
Furthermore we should like to know whether such turbo-enginee exists, such the power of the engine may be alternatively conveyed completly to a propeller and then continuously changed to the jet and vice-versa.
Does anybody know if this kind of turbine exist ?
Where ?
We appreciate any comments about the matter.
Thanks a lot.

Dear Mr. President, 5.12.2000.
First of all, I would like to present myself.
I am an aviation engineer, expert in instrument making, electronics, engineering, and exact mechanics. I have several patents in different areas of engineering, which are well known and recognized in Germany, USA, and Switzerland.
I hold the patent for "Know how", which is registered in the German department of patents (# 199 36 452.4) priority - August 03, 1999. The invention is registered and has the status of a patent in Europe, USA, and Japan. I will be glad to provide the complete information about my patent and my invention at a further occasion, preferably a personal meeting.
A damage to airscrew (propeller) during operation (i.e. a collision with a bird etc.) creates an unbalanced and dangerous vibrations, which can result in the failure of the airscrew and cause a crash. I would like to present you my new idea "a Way and device of standalone dynamic, self-balancing of spun components (with a fixed or varying mass), machines, and mechanisms". The purpose of the invention is to provide a way and a device for effective elimination of potentially dangerous consequences created by unbalance of the airscrew, caused by external damage to the airscrew of a helicopter. The device itself is quite simple. It operates automatically, autonomously, and most of all instantly. This invention is based on Newton's first and second laws. I was successfully tested on a working model and in actual production (centrifuge) at rotation speed of up to 9000 rpm. This invention has gained recognition of experts from several large firms.
My invention posseses the following advantages:
1. Fast compensation of unbalance upon damage caused to airscrew (propeller) of the helicopter and aircraft.
2. Optimization and stabilization of radial load of the shaft of airscrew (propeller) of the helicopter on bearing.
3. Reliability and convenience of installation and mounting at low cost.
4. No need of adjustment or service.
The best way to understand my invention and the way it works is to observe a demonstration with a working model. For demonstration of the invention a laser and stroboscopic control are used.
I offer you this invention with the option of obtaining an exclusive right for using it in your sphere of industry.
I await your answer and your opinion regarding my proposition.
Sincerely yours,
Anatolii Fel

I am very interested in unusual flying contraptions and found this site very well done and very informative, Great job! My question is about a helicoptor type flying machine that I ran onto in the early to middle 80's. A company in California called Mosier Technologies was selling information and designs for what they called a co-axle helicoptor in Popular mechanics and Popular Science mags. I bought a packet and have long ago lost it. They really bragged this thing up stating that with the counter rotating blades that it would be faster, safer, have a bigger payload and be easier to fly than anything ever made. It was quite the sales pitch. My question is are there any companies today building a similar machine? Did this thing disappear because it was unworkable? Has anyone built or flown one? Thanks in advance for any info. roger
