2004 Debate Area

Nial, What kind of damage do you think will happen to an aircraft with the gear extended? Aircraft with retractable landing gear usually do so to reduce the drag associated with having appendages hanging of the aircraft. Drag increases power required to get to certain airspeeds. Helicopters fly slow enough that the drag isn't necessarily high enough to offset the weight increase and complexity of retractable landing gear. Fixed wing aircraft that fly above 15 kts. typically have retractable gear where lower speed aircraft do not.

      1) Has a heli landed on the summit of everest? 2) Is it technically possible for a heli such as 'LAMA' to land on everest? 3) How much payload could be delivered to everest's summit? Many thanks, Bruce.

I am looking for information on how the tail rotor is controlled on the Bell 47D. I have looked at what photos are available, very few, of the D model and can find no control cables in any of the photos. I need to know where they are, how they are mounted and where they originate from the rear of the cockpit, past the engine and move down the boom to the rotor. Any help with this will be greatly appreciated/
