Known as the ITU Recommended Phonetics, or the ITU Standard Phonetics allows concise spoken character transmission .

Developed by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) in 1956 it was then adopted by many other organizations worldwide, including the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) .
