ATHENS, Greece ( Sikorsky Press Release ) -
The government of Greece has signed a contract to purchase two Sikorsky S-70B Seahawk helicopter with an option to buy an additional two aircraft.
The contract also calls for FLIR upgrades to the eight S-70B aircraft already in service
with the Hellenic Navy. The contract was signed June 12 by Andonios Kandas, the
Director General, Ministry of National Defense, and James J. Satterwhite, Sikorsky's
vice-president for International Business Development. The Hellenic Navy already
operates eight S-70B-6 helicopters, which are called AEGEAN HAWKs. The first
aircraft arrived in Greece in 1995.
The Hellenic Navy S-70B-6 is designed to perform Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW)
and Anti-Surface Unit Warfare (ASuW) missions with its integrated suite of dipping
sonar, search radar, electronic support measures and the Penguin anti-ship missile.
AEGEAN HAWK helicopters of the Hellenic Navy also support civilian search and
rescue needs, including medical evacuation missions transporting patients from
remote islands to mainland medical facilities.
The contract, which includes spare parts and additional training for aircrews, is a direct
commercial sale.
Sikorsky's technical and systems integration expertise enables international customers
to modify the S-70 Seahawk to their maritime helicopter requirements. Thailand,
Spain, Australia, Japan, and Taiwan all fly custom-equipped Seahawks, while
Turkey has eight under contract.
