LYNN, Mass., USA ( Reuters ) - GE Aircraft Engines, a unit of General Electric Co. , said on Friday it won a $300-million contract to supply engines for the Italian government's fleet of 196 NH90 helicopters.

Deliveries are expected to begin in 2004, GE Aircraft Engines said in a news release.

The aircraft will be powered by the T700/T6E1 turboshaft, the newest model in the family of T700 engines, co-developed and co-produced by GE and Fiat SpA's aircraft engine making unit FiatAvio.

Evendale, Ohio-based GE Aircraft Engines is the world's biggest maker of aircraft engines, with 1999 revenues of $10.7 billion. The helicopter engines for Italy will be manufactured at GE's plant in Lynn, Mass.
