1964-12 | Dec64 active during the Northern California flood “ Instrumental in 1964 Northern California flood. Enroute from Naval Air Station Norh Island San Diego ,California to Naval Air Station Whidbey Island ,Washington. After landing at Arcata ,California for fuel we were advised that Northern California coast was suffering from massive flooding and a small village up the Klamath River was completely cut off from help and in dire need of food and medical assistance. The fog was intense with visibility down to zero above 100feet up to approximately 1000 feet. We volunteered to transport 1500 pounds of " c rations " and Red Cross nurse up to the village of Pequwan to give them help. The flight was intense as we stayed approximately 50 ft above the flooded river and worked our way up toward the village. Upon arrival there was no place to land so we hovered about 2 feet above the flooded field and the Native American villagers formed a chain standing waist deep in water and unloaded the supplies to dry groun where the villagers were all standing. One villager carried the Red Cross nurse to dry land and we very carefully made our way back down the River to the coast and to Arcata. 152191 performed beautifully and was a great addition to our Search and Rescue group at Whidbey Island. This all took place in December,1964. ” | ||
