USMC 17jan70 asg HML-167 had engine failure HMLA-167 “ Elmer Davis LtCol USMC (Ret), personal account of the event: I had an engine failure in this Huey (then configured as a gun bird) during a night test flight (flight code 3L2) on 17 January 1970 when I was a 1st Lt, working in the Maintenance Department as the Quality Assurance Officer and Squadron Pilot. When the engine failed I was headed away from the beach, but was able to turn 270 degrees to the left, line up with the beach. One of the few things I could see was the phosphorescing surf on a very dark night. The auto rotation into the surf was somewhat successful (the skids and engine were both changes) and we missed the local fishing boats pulled up on the sand. The landing site was North of Marble Mountain and just South of the Navy s Base at Camp Tenshaw and Monkey Mountain. Following a special rework (salt water bath) in Japan the aircraft was airlifted back to Da Nang and the squadron flew me to Da Nang to bring it back to the HML-167 Flight Line. ” | |||
