1968-07-27 | 27jul68 /YK-16 crashed near the DMZ in Vietnam “ Skip Curtis personal account: On July 27, 1968 /YK-16 flying with Captain Michael Phillips crashed near the DMZ in Vietnam after losing the number one engine due to battle damage. Left stub wing separated from the aircraft all blades and drive train damaged in descent through trees. No fire, no fatalities. I recall seeing the aircraft in a hangar at PhuBai after it was extracted from the landing zone. It was very "wrinkled", but we were pretty short of airframes and it may have been repaired. I left the area a month later to go aboard the USS TRIPOLI and I'm unaware of the aircraft status after that. ” |
