1985-01-23 23jan85 search

“ On 23 January 1985, myself and Major Dave Currie were tasked to search for the missing aircraft. We had been doing crew training in the Roosevelt Roads, Puerto Rico area when we were called to join the search. It was night time when we were called. We conducted a visual search and also periodically lowered the sonar ball into the water to listen for an emergency beacon signal. It total we searched for four hours, of which two hours was under instrument flight rules. Eventually we ran low on fuel and had to return back to the airport. I don't recall who continued the search after us. We were in the Roosevelt area with HMCS Fraser, a Canadian St. Laurent-class destroyer doing various naval training exercises including torpedo drops. I recall this, since I referred to my pilot log book which had all of these details. I am in the process of writing a short story about that period of my life so had cause to research this and add comment to this webpage. Mike Meraw, Major (ret'd), Canadian Forces.
