1971-10-01 | USS Tripoli (LPH-10) Westpac Deployment In 1971, the helo was assigned as the ship's helo, call sign Greenbug. As one of two crew chiefs and rescue swimmers assigned to the ship, we carried anything and everything that would fit inside or hang underneath this helo. This was the most reliable aircraft I ever worked with. We out flew every helo on the ship and was the Goto for getting any job done whether it was a mail run to Danang, VERTREPS and personnel transfers at sea, taking COMSEVENFLT ADM to wherever he needed to be, medivacs from small ships at night to combat rescue of downed pilot under fire. During monsoons in the Philippines in 1972 we flew food and supplies to villages that were cut off by the floods of over 100 inches of rain in three weeks. This helo never failed to get us to mission and back to the ship. Bill Thompson ADR-3 | ||
