B McMurdo Station accident I believe this was the HH-52 we lost at the south pole during our first Deep Freeze trip in 1971 on the USCGC Staten Island. It was lost on Mount Erebus near McMurdo station near the summit. It was never salvaged and is still there as far as I know. All of the crew were rescued
I found a website that showed pics from 2007 of the Mount Erubus crash site. 1404 is still there...
I was one of two pax on 1404, along with pilot and crew chief, when it went down near the 12,448 ft summit of Mt. Erebus, Antarctica in route from McMurdo Station to Cape Bird
Crew and pax were rescued about 12 hours after the crash. HH-52A 1377 was one of two helicopters involved in the rescue. Can confirm that 1404 is still there. Visit southpolestation.com, Timelines, 1965-74 for story and photographs.
