This helo was part of DDH 266 HMCS Nipigon Air Det when it crashed off Bermuda during an ASW exercise. It happened approx 21:30 hrs. The a/c sank with three of its crews and only the navigator survived. The airframe was not recovered.
Aircraft suffered single engine failure on take-off. Pilot attempted to return while also dumping fuel. Flight deck ready for emergency recovery but a/c became uncontrollable and crashed near the ship. Black moonless night. Difficult recovery by boat of sole survivor and some wreckage. Date was 7/11 local, so 8/11 GMT. (HEG, ship air controller)
