1966-01-29 | 29jan66 crashed in Lancaster Cove, Cholmondeley Sound, Alaska “ This unit crashed on 29 January 1966 in Lancaster Cove, Cholmondeley Sound, Alaska while on a medevac. In less than 6 hours the USCGC Bittersweet (WLB-389) had arrived on scene and recovered it from an inverted position in the water after breaking ice to reach it. All personnel survived with only minor injures including the medevac patient who was evacuated by the Bittersweet at the same time. The crew of the Bittersweet immediately commenced a fresh water wash down of the aircraft and associated electronic equipment with advice from CGAS Annette Island. he entire crew received a letter of appreciation from the CO of the CGC Bittersweet for the salvage of CGAC 1393 resulting in a savings of over $100,000.00 to the government. It was delivered to CGAS Annette Island the next day for further Preservation and apparently rebuilt and returned to service. the last reference I found on it had it sighted on Elgin APB range in 1985. ” | ||
