Until Sep 2006, Keflavik International Airport was also the site of the US Navy at NAS Keflavik. Built in 1941 by the US Army, the air station passed to US Navy control in 1961, primarily as a Maritime Reconnaissance base to stand watch around the Greenland-Iceland-UK gateway to the North Atlantic Ocean.

The base, near the village of Sandgerði, is now operated by the Icelandic Coastguard, who also host the NATO Air Policing mission.
