Aberdeen Royal Infirmary was designed around 1927 and the vision was to consolidate a host of medical services from around the town (eg Woolmanhill, dating from the 1740s) which had been engulfed by Aberdeens expansion and would bring services together in one large, green-field site.
Building began in 1928 at Fosterhill to the west of the city centre, using the magnificent local grey granite and various wards were opened as progress was made. It was officially opened in Sep 1936. Since then it has grown and while facilities and access have undoubtedly improved, the additions have been less architecturally sympathetic.
Given Aberdeens central role in the North Sea hydrocarbons industry, it is equipped with a Category 1 Hyperbaric Chamber, to deal with recompression and other diving-related emergencies.
There has been a helipad at the site since before 1988.
