Opened on 1 May 1939 as Birminghams municpal airport with services to Croydon, from a grass strip. At the outbreak of WWII it was taken over by the War Office and used by RAF and RNAS. Improvements to the surface were made and two hard runways laid. In 1949, still under government control, international civilian services began to Paris and from 1955, to Europe. In 1960, control was relinquished (first) to Birmingham City and then in 1974 to West Midlands Council.
