Opened Oct 1940 as an RAF Coastal Command station and played a key role in WWII anti-submarine operations. It became home to a fast jet training until late 1974.
Extensive work was carried out in the late 1970s to transform the base for fast jet weapons training, which arrived in Jun 1980 and stayed until 1994.
Although the base is now a Royal Marine barracks, given its location on the north Devon coast, it was still the long term home to a Search and Rescue unit (until Oct 2015) and a gliding unit.
