The land around Halton was initially used by the 1st Brigade of Guards for summer exercise in 1913. In 1918, the site was purchased for the RAF and the first accommodation blocks appeared early in the 1920s. After WWII it was the site of No. 1 School of Technical Training (1 SoTT) and some areas were used as a store.
In 2016, an MoD study identified it as surplus to requirements and a plan is being formulated for its sale and commercial redevelopment.
