By Jun 1940 this was a base for the Italian Air Force. After WWII it became home to the RAF Desert Rescue Team and a refuel base for the Far East slip routes flown by Transport Command. The bases future seemed assured by the UK-Libyan Treaty of 1953 but the Sep 1969 coup which overthrew King Idris meant the British were obliged to withdraw and the RAF station closed on 28 Mar 1970.
